Five easy steps to tackling writer's block

We've all been there. You sit down to start writing only to find yourself staring at the blank page with no idea what to put down. Here are some of the things I've found useful to get over writer's block.
1. Rest
Take a break. Sitting there stressing about not knowing what to write is only going to make things worse. Listening to music usually helps me. I'll turn on the radio and attempt to dance to whatever song is on. Doing this gives your brain a bit of a time out. While you're distracted by other things your creative juices will be recharging.
2. Read a Book
When I really need inspiration, I pick up a book and start reading. This gives me ideas and often times what really helps is reading the authors notes or the acknowledgements where they thank all the people who helped them along the way. This proves to me that everyone isn't able to sit down and produce a fully readable novel or short story on the first try. We all have our ups and down and our moments of self doubt. It's pushing through those moments and realizing your true potential that makes it all worth wile.
3. Freewrite
Write whatever comes to mind. Sit down with a pen and paper and challenge yourself to see what kind of completely random and ridiculous thoughts come to you. This can be the opening to many new ideas that can help you with the project you're stuck on.
4. Set goals
Give yourself a certain amount of words to achieve in a day. Having a deadline will give you the initiative  to buckle down and write what you have to. I'm a procrastinator. I'm the girl who gets an adrenaline high from writing my assumingly amazing essay or assignment the night before only to re-read it in the daylight and realize that I must have been sleep typing. I start out with nine hundred words a day until I get a flow going with my novel.
5. Don't panic
Calm down. Don't stress about it. This happens to everyone who has ever picked up a pen or turned on a computer. If you're not into what you're writing then just take a break and come back in a day or two. Don't give up because that would be admitting defeat. Most importantly, remember why you started writing in the first place. You have something to say, and you want people to read it. Don't be afraid to show them.

Just try writing a little bit a day. Even if it's just 500 words, that's something. You have to squeeze in time no matter what you're doing. If I have time before bed to get in at least a chapter, I do. Or in the morning before everyone's up I get in a few hundred words. Also, try not to stop to edit. That only puts you farther behind. Get in everything that's rattling around your noggin and make corrections when the projects finished. Hope this bit of rambling as helped lol ^_^
